Gone are the good old days. As kids we knew who owned what, this was just in the beginning of people putting Posted signs up, no locals ever did that it was the city folk who bought all our vacation land in Northern WI. Anyway, we knew which chunks we could hunt and which chunks were off limits and we abided by that. A few cabins were on good fishing lakes so Id be lying if I said we never snuck in and launched a canoe or just sat at their picnic tables and drank beers. But we picked up all our trash and didnt break in to the cabins or destroy anything like kids got to. Good on ya for keeping your cool and being a man about things that neighbor seems like the type of boy whose been learning all the hard lessons over and over in life and still dont get it. Never will.

To answer your question. It is not a bad decision to grunt when a doe is being chased by a buck. In fact, it is a great idea. A doe running from a buck will often run to the sound of another buck or doe in an attempt to lose the buck chasing her. Especially if the buck is not a mature buck. However, once the mature buck appeared, your two best options were to remain silent or snort wheeze. Just note that a mature buck will likely move to get in between you and the doe and attempt to herd her away. This may give you a shot opportunity. If it doesn't, at least you tried. It is tuff to get that close and not get him. I remember those hunts and think about them more than the ones where I kill them. Maybe it didn't happen but sooner or later everything will fall into place. When I am in the stand I think about where he is right now. I wonder how close he might be. I wonder if I will get a chance today. From minute to minute you never know what is about to unfold. That is what keeps me going back at 69 years old.
